PARIS, Sept 14 (Reuters) - French magazine Closer published a series of photos of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, sunbathing topless on Friday, dealing a fresh blow to the royal family as it tries to move on from a scandal over naked shots of Prince Harry.

Closer, a weekly round-up of celebrity gossip, ran a five-page spread of photos of Middleton relaxing topless with Prince William on a balcony at a 19th century hunting lodge in southern France it said is owned by a son of the late Princess Margaret.

Under the headline "Oh my God!", the photos show the Duchess removing her bikini top then relaxing on a sun lounger, apparently oblivious to paparazzi lurking nearby as the pair vacationed at the property in early September.

The publication reopens a debate over the privacy of Britain's royal family and the freedom of the press just weeks after a U.S. website published grainy photos of William's younger brother Harry cavorting naked in a Las Vegas hotel room.

"Harry started the fashion: these days the Windsors take their clothes off," the French magazine quipped in the photo spread, which it claimed as a world exclusive.

The royal couple, who are on a tour of southeast Asia, learned of the magazine spread while in Malaysia and were angry and sad their privacy had been breached, a royal source said, adding the pictures were believed to be genuine.

A second source said Buckingham Palace planned to contact French lawyers to see what options were available.

"There is a feeling of anger and disbelief about these photographs," the source said. "We feel there has been a red line crossed with regard to publishing these images."

There was no immediate comment from Closer magazine.

The photos of Harry stained a positive image the Royal family has carefully crafted as it worked to turn the page on Princess Diana's death in 1997 and a raft of scandals at the time including Prince Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Ferguson photographed having her toes sucked by a U.S. businessman as she sunbathed topless.

The first royal source said Friday's photos in Closer, taken at a private location and in breach of French privacy laws, had "turned the clock back 15 years."

William and Kate were on a short vacation at the Chateau d'Autet near Aix-en-Provence in the Luberon region, whose picture-postcard villages, rolling lavender fields and vineyards have made it a favourite getaway spot for wealthy foreigners.

At one point the Duchess, clearly recognisable in the slightly fuzzy images, stands up and partly peels down her bikini bottoms as William rubs sun lotion on her back.

"The last time we saw Kate and William on a balcony it was for their wedding. But they had more clothes on," reads one photo caption. Another says: "People always say she doesn't need to dress up to look good. Well ... Kate is proving this."

And the man who's bringing the two together is a legend in his own right: Pierre Cardin, the modern master of de Sade's domain.

The 87-year-old fashion designer (who turns 88 on July 7) began restoring the castle of the Marquis a decade ago as part of his controversial plan to turn this hamlet some 60 miles (100km) north of Marseille into "the St. Tropez of culture."

The French premiere of "Casanova: Love and Betrayal in Venice" on Bastille Day (July 14) marks the 10th anniversary of the "Festival de Lacoste," Cardin's attempt to bring big-city culture to the Provencal countryside.

Performances take place in the open-air theater constructed by Cardin in the chateau's quarry-on the grounds where the Marquis staged his own theatrical productions, both respectable and obscene.

Depending on the year, Cardin's fest ranges from the Sade-centric to the eccentric, usually with a nod to the brand-savvy designer's pet projects.

This summer's line-up features "Le Petit Groom de Chez Maxim's," a farce set in the Parisian landmark that Cardin bought in the early 1980s and has since turned into a global chain of restaurants and hotels.

THE CASANOVA CONNECTION The Casanova connection is also close to Cardin's heart — he's even designed the costumes for the show himself.

"I'm Italian, you know — I'm Venetian," he told Reuters at the Lacoste Festival, a reminder that "Pierre" was originally known as "Pietro."

Cardin's parents fled the fascism of Mussolini to move to France, where their son began his career apprenticed to a tailor. Now a flesh-and-blood fashion label, Cardin is also the proud owner of the palazzo where Casanova trawled for love and money in Venice.

"It's very funny that I live in Casanova's villa and the Marquis de Sade's," he told me.

Still, not all of Lacoste's 420 inhabitants are happy with his designs on their community. Until now, the village has miraculously escaped gentrification.

Lacoste is ground zero of the "Year in Provence" dream, a castled hilltop of stone maisons and cobbled streets overlooking the cherry trees, olives and lavender of the Luberon Valley.

Former adman Peter Mayle began his 1989 bestseller with lunch at Lacoste and turned neighboring Ménerbes into a mecca for upscale tourists, while Hollywood actor John Malkovich has a house in the valley and the playwright Tom Stoppard has spent time living in the village itself.

BONJOUR, Y'ALL

In a surreal touch, much of Lacoste is already occupied by an art school from America's Deep South. The 'Lacoste campus' of the Georgia-based Savannah College of Art and Design is the legacy of Bernard Pfriem, an American painter who fell in love with Lacoste in the 1950s and began buying up buildings and restoring them.

But Cardin hopes to take Lacoste to a whole new level.

Besides the Marquis' chateau, the designer now owns some 40 buildings in the surrounding village, including the Café de Sade, a couple of galleries, a boulangerie, and a boutique that sells goodies from Maxim's; with plans for a restaurant, a couple of luxury hotels, and even a golf course.

The size of the castle's theater reflects the scale of his ambitions: it holds more than twice as many people as live in the village itself.

Cardin's opponents have organized petitions and letter-writing campaigns, likening the wealthy outsider to the feudal seigneurs like de Sade who lorded it over Lacoste for centuries.

In response, Cardin has said simply: "I just want to make the village beautiful."

Against that backdrop, the timing of opening may add a certain frisson to the Festival de Lacoste. Bastille Day commemorates a key event in the French Revolution, when ordinary citizens rose up to destroy a medieval prison-fortress that symbolized their oppression.

And sadism's namesake also played a role in the Storming of the Bastille. As one of its last inmates, the Marquis de Sade converted his urinal into a loudspeaker to provoke the protesters, claiming that his fellow prisoners were being slaughtered and needed to be rescued.

Ironically, his lies backfired.

De Sade was transferred to an insane asylum just days before the Bastille was liberated, and much of his writing was lost or destroyed in the looting.

Pierre Cardin's Festival de Lacoste runs from July 14 to August 6, with tickets ranging from around 30 euros to 140 euros ($40.25-$187.80), depending on the show.

French critics slam Crowe's romance in Provence

(Reuters) - The French press has lined up to demolish Russell Crowe's latest film "A Good Year," deriding the romance of a London banker who retires to a chateau in Provence as a pitiful Anglo-Saxon caricature of France.

The left-wing daily Liberation accused director Ridley Scott of leaving no cliche untouched as he pandered to British middle class fantasies of the good life in the Luberon, the picturesque southern region often seen as the heart of Provence.

"Appalling from start to finish, 'A Good Year' collapses under cliches of an ochre Luberon made for a loaded Anglo-Saxon elite," the paper's film critic said in Wednesday's edition.

British housebuyers fleeing the gray skies of home for good food and cheap property in rural France have long been subjects of amused mockery and occasional alarm for the French, who have seen areas in Provence and the Dordogne almost overrun by the English.

The film, a change of pace from Scott and Crowe's previous action-packed collaboration "Gladiator," is loosely based on British author Peter Mayle's best-seller "A Year in Provence" and has attracted mixed reviews elsewhere.

Mayle's book describes the process of buying and renovating an old farmhouse and adapting to life in a Luberon village, with colorful portrayals of French workmen, neighbors and bureaucracy.

Critics reviewing the film before its French release this week appeared especially incensed by what they saw as its stereotyped portrayal of France.

"Everyone knows the French are grumpy and dirty, wear espadrilles and drive Renault 4s," Le Parisien noted sourly. "Fortunately they know how to appreciate life and good wine."

The Luberon or Luberon Massif (Provençal Occitan: Leberon in classical norm or Leberoun in Mistralian norm), also called Lubéron, has a maximum altitude of 1,256 m and an area of about 600 km². It is composed of three mountain ranges: (from west to east) the Little Luberon, the Big Luberon and the Oriental Luberon, lying in the middle of Provence in the far south of France. The valleys north and south of them contain a number of towns and villages as well as agricultural land. The total number of inhabitants varies greatly between winter and summer, due to a massive influx of tourists during the warm season. It is a favourite destination for French high society and British and American visitors because of the pleasant and picturesque towns and villages, comfortable way of life, agricultural wealth, historical and cultural associations (e.g., Samuel Beckett lived in Cave Bonelly, a vineyard near to Roussillon during World War II), and hiking trails. In the 1970s, people came from all over France to "Le Luberon" in search of a communitarian ideal. The Force de frappe or French strategic nuclear arsenal used to be nearby, underground, on "Le Plateau d'Albion" before being dismantled in the late 1980s. Now, the underground site, where the control of the missiles was, is a public multidisciplinary laboratory of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, the Low-Noise Underground Laboratory of Rustrel - Pays d'Apt. . In the last two decades the Luberon has become known in the English-speaking world especially through a series of books by British author Peter Mayle chronicling his life as an expatriate settled in the Luberon village of Ménerbes. One of Mayle's books was made into a film A Good Year (2006) directed by Ridley Scott, starring Russell Crowe and filmed in the region.

Le Luberon, une terre de providence

Le soleil ici donne la lavande, colore les joues des cerises et fait chanter la langue des habitants. Les saveurs du Luberon sont multiples et son authenticité, rare.

Flâner dans les ruelles pavées des villages perchés, déambuler entre les étals chargés de victuailles, s'arrêter devant des cerises gorgées de jus, craquer pour un poulet fermier élevé au grain, s'offrir des tomates mûres juste à point. Une petite mélodie à l'harmonie sans fausse note se joue chaque jour sur les marchés du Luberon. Langue de terre qui s'étend de Cavaillon à Manosque, entre monts du Vaucluse et pays d'Aix, le Luberon est scindé en deux par la combe de Lourmarin patiemment creusée par la rivière Aiguebrun.

Pratiquement à l'abandon au début du XXe siècle, la région a retrouvé une seconde jeunesse dans les années 1950 lorsque écrivains et peintres - Picasso, Chagall, de Staël - attirés par ce cadre exceptionnel, y ont posé pupitres et chevalets. Depuis, cet engouement ne s'est pas démenti et la région est aujourd'hui très « tendance ». Les mas aux pierres sèches, restaurés avec soin, se sont agrandis de piscines et de jardins ornementaux aux espèces exotiques ; leurs résidents parlent, pour beaucoup, une langue étrangère. N'empêche, les habitants protègent farouchement leur authenticité et leurs racines, au prix, parfois, d'un accueil un peu « rustique ». Une mauvaise prononciation, « Lubéron » à la place de « Luberon » (l'original) et sonne le tocsin de la défiance envers l'allogène. La différence entre gens d'ici et de passage est d'abord linguistique ! Ici justement, les hommes naissent dans des villages bâtis sur des éminences rocheuses, tout là-haut, bien au-dessus de la mêlée. Un orgueil propre aux populations rurales, pas encore perverties par le tourisme de masse, conscientes d'habiter un pays de Cocagne envié de tous. Pour bouter hors de leurs frontières petits revendeurs et autres marchands de pacotilles, les agriculteurs des communes d'Apt et du Coustellet ont créé les marchés paysans avec l'objectif de proposer en direct le produit de leur labeur. L'achat-revente y est strictement interdit. Tout ce qui trône sur leurs étals a été semé, cultivé, nourri et récolté de leurs mains. Une belle occasion de redécouvrir les saisons, la fraîcheur et le goût du vrai. Peu importe les fruits et légumes aux calibres fantaisistes piqués par des oiseaux voraces et où la terre crotte encore les bottes d'oignons ou de radis. Le vrai a un prix que le bon justifie, bien éloigné des achalandages gominés où les pommes brillent comme des souliers vernis. On ne se contente pas de regarder un produit avant de l'acheter. C'est une véritable prise en main. Il faut palper les aubergines, renifler les tomates et casser entre ses doigts les haricots, tâter le coeur humide des laitues, goûter les fromages et les olives. La vraie vie, en somme !

De Monaco à Paris[modifier] En 1967, Sotheby's ouvre des bureaux à Paris et à Monaco. La loi interdisant aux sociétés internationales d'organiser des ventes aux enchères en France, Peter Wilson déplace la salle des ventes à Monaco, enclave internationale non soumise à la législation française. À compter de 1975 et de la vente Redé-Rothschild, Monaco devient un haut lieu de ventes aux enchères, du mobilier français XVIIIe à l'art décoratif. En 1991, nommée présidente de Sotheby's France, Laure de Beauvau Craon7 se donne pour mission d'internationaliser le marché français des ventes aux enchères en attaquant le monopole des commissaires-priseurs vieux de plus de quatre siècles8. Sous la pression constante de Sotheby's mais aussi d'autres acteurs du monde des enchères, la loi mettant fin à ce monopole est adoptée en juillet 2000 et Sotheby's reçoit du Conseil des Ventes le premier numéro d'agrément (n°2001-002)9 délivré en France à une société étrangère.
